Fraser CTE Builds Lasting Relationships

By: Brent Brasure

The CTE Dream Team of Fraser Public Schools has been busy growing opportunities for students to dive deep into the 17 Career Pathways available to our Ramblers.  This progress can only manifest through educators working closely with partners to make magic happen.

Demand for industrial sewing skills have skyrocketed among Ramblers with more than 200 students currently enrolled in the Fashion Design program, led by Ms. Stacie Yokhana.  Developed in partnership with General Motors Global Design Center, the Fashion Design program helps students build technical skills traditionally applied to the textile industry while learning to apply these skills to our local automotive, aerospace, & marine seating & trim markets.  Currently, our team of industry advisors are leading an effort to expand into a much larger space to more than double the amount of equipment that is available to our students in our “Creation Station”.

Fraser welders have enjoyed a successful season of material joining resulting in many students earning welding qualifications under the tutelage of Certified Welding Inspector Jeff Maxwell with I.F. Metalworks of Roseville.  Instructors John Karwowski & Austin Raska work closely to ensure the methods students are learning will be able to yield results when they are authentically evaluated through an industry recognized destructive testing process.  The smiles on the faces of our Ramblers tells the tale of the joy generated through a job well done!

Students in the Fraser Woodworking program, led by Mr. Josh Pulver, are making a lasting impact on their community by working together to build park benches for all Fraser elementary schools. The hands-on project allows students to put their woodworking skills to the test while contributing to the schools' outdoor spaces. The project encourages teamwork, craftsmanship, and a sense of pride, as the students design and construct the benches, which will provide both comfort and a place for relaxation for students and staff alike. Each bench is carefully crafted using quality materials, ensuring durability and functionality for years to come. Due to the positive feedback students received from this project, they have already started another collaborative project building additional customized recycling cabinets for our school community.

A new partnership with Oakland University’s nursing program was forged this year that allows OU students the opportunity to earn their Community Health credit while serving the Fraser Public Schools community.  Nurses have mentored health science students during class time to make curricular connections between the lesson of the day & the application of these skills that the nursing students have started to experience in the field.  Industrial Technology students have been supported during their safety training by learning to “Stop the Bleed” if they happen to need to respond to a first aid emergency in industrial environments.  This partnership also allowed our special education students to receive formal training on hygiene, healthy practices, & proper nutrition as they serve our school community through the “iEat Café”, an extension of our Culinary & Marketing programs at Fraser High School.

This meaningful collaboration of stakeholders demonstrates that teamwork does in fact make the dream work for our Fraser Family!
