Students step into teaching roles through work-based learning programs
This year, six students are completing their Work Based Learning experience with Richmond Community Schools at both Will L. Lee Elementary School and Richmond Middle School. These students are currently placed and working with seasoned professionals in classrooms ranging from kindergarten to third grade and middle school math and physical education. At their jobsites, students do everything from teaching lessons to working in small groups, individually providing support to students who need it, as well as serving as role models for younger students within the district. Each of the students in this WBL placement have successfully completed both courses in the Education General pathway and are focusing on further developing their understanding in competencies of their choosing. They have done safety training, worked with experts in the field to learn about the various aspects of education and are now preparing to pursue a post-secondary path in the field of education. Not only do programs like this benefit the students, but there are also benefits to the industry partner as well. Heidi Mangune, Principal of Will L. Lee Elementary School states, “the high school cadets have been an incredible help to our elementary teachers, providing much-needed support in the classroom and building strong connections with our students. Their involvement has made a positive impact on both teaching and learning.” Overall, this experience is beneficial to various stakeholders and one we know will continue to grow in years to come.
